Dog rose (Rosa canina) is a wild shrub that grows up to 4 meters tall and blooms from June to August. It requires a sunny or semi-shaded location and nutrient-rich moist soil. In autumn, after its flowers have fallen, the bush is “adorned” with oval and purple-red fruits which we all know as rose hips. In this medieval remedy for lung conditions, you can use either the leaves and flowers of the dog rose bush, harvested in May, or the ripe berries and leaves harvested in the autumn. Let’s get to the elixir recipe.

Dog rose flowers and leaves have been used since times immemorial to prepare elixirs and remedies for bronchitis, lung pain, and purulent expectoration, as this plant is effective in all lung ailments. For the following medieval elixir, you will need:

  • 100 g dog rose flowers and leaves or 200 g rose hips and dog rose leaves
  • 100 g raw honey
  • 1 liter of water (4 cups)

Boil the dog rose flowers and leaves in water, together with wildflower honey, for about a quarter of an hour, removing the foam that forms on the surface, from time to time. Strain through cheesecloth and pour the hot tea into sterilized bottles (500 ml). Store in the refrigerator. Drink 2-3 cups of this healing elixir several times a day.

This medieval elixir can be prepared either in spring or autumn. In spring (May), use the flowers, leaves, and even young twigs of the dog rose bush, while in the autumn, use the rose hip berries and leaves. Before preparing the tea, finely chop the rose hips and leaves. According to renowned medieval herbalist Hildegard van Bingen:

“Dog rose flowers are very warm and symbolize affection. Those who suffer from lung weakness should chop the flowers and leaves and boil them together with raw honey. To remove the foam, strain the tea through a sieve to make it as clear as possible. Drink this elixir frequently, because it cleans the lungs of rot and heals them.”
